Planning application PA22/00218, (and see below) will, if successful, see Zennor’s historically and culturally unique Carne (cottage) developed into a private, modernistic dwelling, art studio, office, gym, double garage, plant room and solar array. The applicant is seeking a Certificate of Lawfulness giving Permitted Development Rights. This is not a formal consultation process, but a matter of a legalistic appraisal. If successful there will be no further scrutiny of this proposal, which we feel is totally inappropriate in both scale and design. Please look at the application and, although comments are not invited, make your views known to Mark Broomhead, Development Management Group Leader, at Cornwall Council.

The tiny cottage, derelict since the1980s and reclaimed by nature, nestles into the hillside high on the Zennor moors. The integrity of the moors has been fiercely guarded over generations. It is an AONB, a proposed SSSI and the adjacent land is protected by National Trust Covenants. The ancient archaeology is well chronicled and includes Scheduled Monuments such as Zennor and Sperris Quoits. The area is a haven for wildlife and a source of peace and calm for the local community and visitors alike. Making a fresh vehicular access will cut right across the moorland and, with the extensive proposed development, will cause devastation to the natural environment, ancient archaeology and one of West Cornwall’s last remaining tracts of wild moorland.

The threat to Carne and the surrounding moorland is fast moving and continually evolving. We are grateful for, and humbled by, the ever-growing swell of support for the campaign to protect it.

This application for a Certificate of Lawfulness giving Permitted Development Rights was refused by Cornwall Council Planning Department on 4th July.  We expect that an appeal or a full planning application will be issued in due course.
